One of the oldest painted caves in the world, it has been closed to the public since its discovery and remains to this day an object of fascination for people everywhere, marking a major turning point in parietal art and in the history of the first modern humans. By venturing deep into heart of this unique paleolithic site, Philippe Durand takes up a considerable artistic challenge. The cave presents itself as a closed universe, a quantifiable set of signs within a spectacular natural architecture, a place where time seems to stand still. Durand purposefully distances himself from objective representations, in order to offer a more intimate, more subjective window into the cave and its art. To achieve this, he combines colour filters with multiple exposure techniques. Durand thus defines a space of creation and non-objective representation, one able to focus the attentions of each viewer in a different way. Rather than working with colour in a realist mode, he uses it to suggest an element of information or a specific code, as in astronomical or microscopic photography. Drowilal, use popular images of contemporary culture that are intentionally torn from their usual context. With the help of diverse techniques, deliberately bright colors, and irony, the artists transform these images and question the conventional principles of artistic photography. The book “Paparazzi” is putting together celebrities photographs stolen by paparazzi rearranging in the book form through different collage, working on typography, colours and shapes accompanied by explicit titles “The Beach“, “Bike Riding“, “Surfing“. By juxtaposing heterogeneous and often contradictory shots and blurring the boundaries between natural and artificial, Mazaccio &amp; Drowilal provoke the viewer, who is doomed to balance on the verge of disgust and pleasure when confronted by the authors’ extraordinary artistic experiment. 16︎24 cm, hard cover, 128 pages, 120 colour photographs &amp; RVB BOOKS book design https://delphin.club/Soukhos-galery Mon, 29 Nov 2021 11:02:28 +0000 club delphin https://delphin.club/Soukhos-galery For several years, Raphaël Barontini has endeavored to give a pictorial, poetic and political visibility to the faces and bodies of Black history. To this end, he delves into iconographies around the world, and more specifically those of the 18th century, marked by the Enlightenment as well as slavery. Along the way, he pays tribute to both emblematic and nameless figures left out of national narratives. Barontini cross-pollinates the iconographies explored, ranging from those of the European bourgeoisie or African royal courts to popular imagery as well as ethnographic and anthropological archives. Creolization is an integral part of his artistic process. Soukhos chronicles Barontini’s residency at the invitation of LVMH Métiers d’Art, during which he intervened with energy and zeal at Heng Long Leather, a Singapore tannery specializing in crocodile leather. After gaining an understanding of Heng Long’s know-how, he played with it and opened up hitherto unimagined possibilities with the artisans as he developed his project. Barontini combines a deep appreciation of textile as a medium with a mastery of fabric printing, enhancement and dyeing processes. The outcome of this artist’s residency is a series of mounted artifacts, versatile pieces, elements of adornment, and manifesto objects with flawless finishing touches, brought together as a great set piece, akin as much to an installation as a wonderful parade. As this edition of the residency was held in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Barontini had to adapt his approach. He and the photographer Alexandre Guirkinger needed to draw on their creativity in producing the images for this book. To ensure that the tannery would be present despite the distance, videos were taken within the Heng Long Leather ateliers in Singapore, with stills later captured as photographic prints. Due to travel restrictions, a photo shoot of a performance incorporating pieces from the series was arranged at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, a place that has shaped Barontini’s tastes and inspirations as a native of this city, supplemented by sessions on the roof of a building. collection from the 1910s: more than 6,000 of the first coloured photographs made by one amateur in Lorraine (FR)! Julien Gérardin created a large collection of images picturing the region from the beginning of the century and scenes stolen from the painters of the same period. His knowledge of the colours and their combinations as well as his cinematographic eye made the creation of this book mandatory.
